Gerhard Wendt – Co Lead Cancer Experience Advisor SCRI (April 2026)
After retiring seven years ago from a more than 30-year career in the medical device industry with Fortune 500 companies, I felt an ardent desire to give back by sharing both my professional experience and personal journey. My life has taken me through many paths that have shaped my deep commitment to healthcare and patient-centered care.
As a cancer survivor, and longtime caregiver to family members, I have experienced healthcare not only as a professional, but also as a patient, advocate, and advisor. These experiences have brought me into nearly every department of the hospital system, collaborating closely with the dedicated providers who support patients and families through some of life’s most difficult moments. Witnessing their compassion, commitment, and expertise has had a lasting impact on me.
Seven years ago, I began my advisory work with the Southeast Regional Cancer Centre Patient and Family Advisory Council, where I saw firsthand the power of meaningful engagement between patients, families, and care teams. More recently, I have been fortunate to contribute to the future of healthcare through my involvement with our Regional Health Information System, Lumeo, serving on the steering committee since its inception. This work represents a crucial step forward in improving care experiences and outcomes for our communities.
To me, person-centered care means true partnership—patients, families, providers, and systems working together toward better outcomes. I remain inspired by those who dedicate themselves to empowering others and advancing care. Research and innovation continue to be essential pathways to improving health outcomes and partnerships for the broader population.
